Install the Shield Web extension
Shield Web is the browser extension that monitors and enforces your organization's AI usage policies directly in Chrome. Installing it takes about two minutes.
Install from the Chrome Web Store
- Open the Shield Web listing in the Chrome Web Store.
- Select Add to Chrome and confirm the permission prompt.
- Pin the extension: select the puzzle-piece icon in the Chrome toolbar, then the pin next to Shield Web. The Shield icon now shows its protection status at a glance.
Sign in with your work account
Shield Web uses your organization's existing sign-in — there is no separate extension password.
- Select the Shield icon in the toolbar.
- Choose Sign in and complete the sign-in in the Shield Control window that opens (your organization's SSO applies here).
- When the handoff finishes, the popup shows your account and your organization's active policies.
Verify it is working
Open a supported AI tool such as ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini. The Shield indicator shows that the page is protected, and the side panel lists what applies on the current site.
Note: if your organization deploys Shield Web via managed policy (MDM or Google Workspace), the extension may already be installed and signed in for you — the steps above are only needed for self-install.
Troubleshooting
- The extension appears but shows you as signed out — sign in again from the popup; your session may have expired.
- A policy change is not visible on an already-open tab — reload the tab once; freshly-applied policies attach to new page loads.
