How Shield Web updates work

Updated July 5, 2026·1 min readAll plans

Shield Web ships through the Chrome Web Store, so updates arrive automatically with Chrome's regular extension updates — there is nothing to install by hand.

What happens to open AI-tool tabs

Chrome extension updates normally disconnect an extension from pages that are already open. For a security extension that would be a silent gap: enforcement would stop on exactly the tabs you are working in.

Shield Web closes that gap itself: right after an update it re-attaches its protection to already-open AI-tool tabs — without reloading them, so an in-progress prompt is preserved. Healthy tabs are left untouched.

If a tab cannot be reached that way, the side panel falls back to the amber Reload the page to activate protection indicator for that tab — one reload and protection is active again.

Checking your version

Open chrome://extensions and find the Shield Web card — the version is shown there. Your admin can see the rollout state across the organization in Shield Control.

Note: you never need to uninstall/reinstall for an update. If something looks wrong after an update, a reload of the affected AI-tool tab is almost always the fix — see Policy not enforcing?.

The side panel says "Reload the page to activate protection"

The amber dot means this tab was open before Shield could attach — one reload turns it green. Why it happens and why Shield can't just do it for you.

Consent and what data Shield Web collects

Nothing is collected before you consent. Shield records which AI services you use and what kind of action happened — never your prompts or the sensitive values themselves.

Enable Shield Web in Incognito windows

Close the Incognito gap: allow the extension in Incognito yourself, or make coverage mandatory org-wide via managed policy.
